Title Design Research: Thriller 30 days of Night

 1.    How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones?

Ni- Nine Titles were displayed in the opening sequence of 30 days of Night. Stated in the article on watch the titles," The audience is confronted with a sequence of highly disquieting images that cross-dissolve or fade to black. Details of torn and tainted photographs, northern lights, shadows, a bloody tooth embedded in a thick layer of ice and references to the Alaskan wintercape. Brian Reitzell‘s haunting score greatly enhances the discomforting atmosphere." The titles in this opening sequence are simple in all white, however in all capitial letters to state the importantance. I highly like the simple design of the titles and the design of the 30 Days of Night title.

2.    What connotations do the images carry?

- The images carry the discomforting atmosphere with Details of torn and tainted photographs, northern lights, shadows, a bloody tooth embedded in a thick layer of ice and references to the Alaskan wintercape. The incomplete images the childern were looking towards the camera. I believe the dark spots on the camera could represent a dark force. The bloody tooth in the thick layer of represents the childern stuck at a point and is a refrence to the setting. The dark screen right when the clip plays represents a moment of suspense towards the audience. The eye at the end adds to the of me feeling like im being watched. This can be taken as a hunting type of watch were it feels like you got put in the character shoes.

3.    How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

The burned photos and eerie shattered artifacts slowly reveal the untold horrors the town faced. The Producer wanted to expand the story of the towns people a little – those that survived, others that were the faces behind distant screams in streets, heard throughout the film. They also wanted to hint that one of them -the boy- could be a vampire. The super natural aspect of this story can be represented throught the dark spots on the screen could represent a supernatural force.

4.    What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

- The use of makeup and certain aspects of a thriller horror movies tht everyone loves. The crew asked for photos of cast and family and Sony supplied some, but sourced most of the pictures or shots own to look like the town inhabitants. Then filmed plates of these elements along with organic materials to create the vignettes. The time-lapse ice was real but found treacle to be quite good blood, along with washing powder mixed with course sea salt for snow.
